After this, I worked as a Graphic Designer for a year and half before leaving N.Z to find work in London and Holland.
After returning to N.Z in 1992, I worked in a variety of jobs from sign writing to sand-blasting glassware and ended up back at Art School in 1996.
This time, I studied Fine Arts and after transferring from Unitec Auckland to Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Majoring in Ceramics.
My interest in Asian culture led me to seek work in Korea and Japan where I taught English and studied traditional ceramics for 4 1/2 years I was there.
I returned to Auckland early 2007 and have been teaching English part-time as well as continuing to create art, both ‘Ceramic Sculptures and Paintings’.
My travels have had a big influence on my work; especially my time spent in Greece and Turkey. I made a series of Greeks masks and various sculptures, referencing Classical Greek Art.
The Japanese influence of flattened space seems to have had an effect on my painting techniques, mainly in “Hopes for the Future”.
This painting represents modern-day New Zealand and the balance between the human-made and the natural. My concern is for the environment- that it be preserved forever.
My latest series of works have been based on New Zealand native birds. I have made several tile murals: hard rolled, painted with slips, cut into squares, fired twice, and occasionally a third time with an enamel firing. These murals are mounted onto board, framed and ready for hanging on the wall.
Nowadays, I look forward to discovering new techniques, either ceramic or painting orientated.
I enjoy creating ‘new artwork and bringing pleasure to peoples’ lives’, who view my artwork.
I hope you enjoy these creations.
